July 1858 saw the birth of Australia's own game, Australian Football, when talented cricketer Thomas Wentworth Wills initiated the game as a winter fitness activity, By the late 1800s clubs had been formed throughout the Melbourne metropolitan area and extended to Geelong. The ubiquitous oval and four goal posts were becoming a familiar sight and the rules were developing with a new code drawn up in 1874. One hundred and thirty years on, Australia's own football code sees 420,000 participants with an annuall aggregate of 6.6 Million Spectators.
