Like red sentinels, posting boxes have stood guard on the streets of cities and towns in Australia for more than 150 years. In the nineteenth century, cast-iron posting boxes were generally manufactured at local foundries, although some models were imported from England. They were designed in a wide range of shapes and sizes. Typically, they were cylindrical, featured a decorative frienze and were topped by a device such as a crown.
