In 1966 the Decimal Currency System was introduced to Australia. With a new currency system came new coinage denominations and designs. In this first year the 50c coin was round and made of 80% Silver! However it was quickly discovered by the Australian Government that the value of the silver within the round Fifty Cent coin would ultimately outweigh the face value of the coin.

A blunder that was calculated and rectified immediately once discovered by the Royal Australian Mint. A recall of all 1966 round 50c that had already hit circulation was made and a new, more cost effective Australian 50c design was born. The Dodecagon Cupro/Nickel multi faceted 50c Coin still used in Australian Circulation till this day. The new Fifty Cent Coin design was first produced for circulation in 1969.

This 2019 Royal Australian Mint 5 x Dodecagon 50c Collection comprises of 4 x Cupro/Nickel 50c Coins which all display a different QEII Effigy which the Australian 50c coin has worn on its obverse over time since 1969. The 5th Coin Being a Gold Plated 50c! Celebrating 2019 as being the 50th Anniversary Of the Dodecaganal Australian Coin
