Australia is home to three species of wombat: Common Wombat (Vombatus ursinus), Northern Hairy-nosed Wombat (Lasiorhinus krefftii) and Southern Hairy-nosed Wombat (Lasiorhinus krefftii). While not exactly common, the bare-nosed species can be found in diverse habitats in south-eastern Australia, including Tasmania, while the two hairy-nosed species are rarely encountered; the northern is considered critically endangered and the southern near threatened.

Weighing up to around 35 kilograms, this stout, barrel-shaped marsupial could be considered Australia’s most consummate digger. Its short, powerful legs and sharp claws allow it to create extensive burrow systems, up to 20 metres in length, and its backwards-facing pouch is an adaptation designed for subterranean tunnelling. Yet, while significant energy is spent digging complex tunnel-and-chamber networks, these nocturnal herbivores also spend much time asleep.
