A unique tribute to a key moment in Australia’s ongoing battle against the ‘tyranny of distance’, this new Australian legal tender coin from the Royal Australian Mint marks the 150th anniversary of the launch of the Overland Telegraph Line.

A remarkable feat of engineering, the Overland Telegraph Line ran across 36,000 poles stretching nearly 3,000km from Port Augusta to Darwin. With the line then connecting with an undersea cable that led to Europe, this major breakthrough meant that Australia had a telegraphic link to the rest of the world.

Notable for the low mintage of just 15,000 coins – each set in a RAM pack – this one-year-only type is just as important to collectors as to those with a passion for Australian history. Why? Because this coin will not be issued for circulation and will never be found in change!
