In 1937 and 1938, the silver Australian Crown was exclusively minted in Melbourne. It features a royal crown design on the reverse, created by George Kruger Gray, and a portrait of George VI on the obverse, designed by Thomas H Paget. The coin holds a denomination of 5 shillings.
Initially introduced in 1937 to commemorate the coronation of George VI, the Australian Crown quickly became a cherished memento of the event, leading to its widespread hoarding. Due to its popularity, it was reissued in 1938 but did not achieve the same level of success. The coin, weighing 28.27 grams and measuring 38.5 millimeters in diameter, was considered too bulky and cumbersome for everyday transactions. The mintage for the 1937 crown amounted to 1,008,000 coins.
