For more than three decades the Australian Kookaburra has been one of The Perth Mint’s most beloved silver series, and the 2026 5oz Incused release continues that tradition with a powerful new interpretation of Australia’s iconic “laughing jackass.” The kookaburra is far more than a bird of the bush — its raucous dawn chorus has long been called the bushman’s alarm clock, while Aboriginal stories in some regions credit the bird’s laughter with coaxing the sun to rise and bring light to the land. Known for lifelong pair bonds, cooperative family groups, and patient, deadly hunting skill, the kookaburra embodies both the wild energy and the quiet resilience of the Australian landscape. This limited edition captures that spirit in pure silver.

The reverse, designed by Wade Robinson, shows a kookaburra in full flight above a river, framed by gnarled trees and rugged rock. Rather than the usual raised relief, the design elements are struck incused — recessed into the surface — creating a dramatic play of light and shadow that makes the bird appear to leap from the metal. The inscription “KOOKABURRA,” the Perth Mint’s “P” mintmark, the weight, purity and 2026 year-date complete the design. The obverse carries Dan Thorne’s portrait of His Majesty King Charles III. Struck from 5oz of 99.99% pure silver with a maximum mintage of only 500, each coin is presented in a protective acrylic display case within a themed shipper, making it a striking centrepiece for any collection of Australian wildlife or modern numismatic art.
