In May and June 1968 units of the 1st Australian Task Force defended Fire support bases against repeated assaults by the North Vietnamese Regular Army in what was then part of Bien Hoa Province, Vietnam. This period of the Vietnam war was the largest and most ongoing engagement the Australian Forces had been involved in.

All attacks by the Vietnamese were deterred at significant cost of life for the Vietnamese. The Australians suffered the deaths of 25 soldiers and over 100 more were injured.
