In 2021, it is 150 years since the first Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals opened its doors in Australia. Now known as the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals
(RSPCA), this venerable organization traces its roots to a public meeting held in Melbourne on
4 July 1871 to discuss the ill-treatment of horses in Victoria – horses being, at a time, essential for the transportation of people and goods in the colony.
