The 2025 Big Merino PNC, part of the Aussie Big Things series by the Royal Australian Mint and Australia Post, celebrates Goulburn’s iconic roadside legend. Encased in a textured envelope depicting the Southern Tablelands’ golden fields and Hume Highway, it features a $1.50 stamp showcasing the Big Merino’s majestic profile with a Goulburn first-day-of-issue postmark (September 24, 2025), and an uncirculated $1 aluminium bronze coin with the Merino’s form and King Charles III’s obverse, making it a prized collectible for philatelic and numismatic fans.
Standing 15.2 meters tall and weighing 97 tonnes, the Big Merino, nicknamed "Rambo," was unveiled in 1985 as a tribute to Goulburn’s wool heritage. Originally built by the Mokany brothers, it drew tourists until a 1992 highway bypass reduced visitors, leading to a 2007 relocation closer to the Hume Highway interchange. Now at a bustling service center, it houses a wool history exhibition and an observatory in its "eyes," offering road-trippers a unique blend of souvenirs, panoramic views, and Australia’s 200-year wool legacy.
