Although he sought success as a writer, Henry Lawson was thoroughly familiar with hard, physical work. As a boy, he labored on the family's selection at Eurunderee. Later there were stints as a builder and, in 1892-93, he carried his sway on a punishing trip to Bourke. Although he vowed to never to repeat this trip, it was crucial in the development of his creative imagination.
