The Quadrant Dragon set consists of four coins that each comprise one quarter of a circle. When arranged together the coins form a circle with a square in the centre reminiscent of the first currency of the Chinese empire. These ‘ban liang’ coins were first cast during the Qin Dynasty around 200BCE.

The dragon is significant in traditional Chinese culture as one of 12 animals that participated in the Emperor’s Great Race, held to determine the order of their appearance in the lunar calendar. A benevolent creature said to control water and weather, the dragon finished fifth, and has subsequently reigned during every fifth year in the 12-year lunar cycle – including 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000, 2012, and 2024.

Bestowed with instinctive bravery, persistence, and intelligence, those born in the Year of the Dragon are regarded as ambitious, charismatic, and successful.
