The nation's only decimal coin to be issued in precious metal, the 1966 Round 50c coin was doomed from the very beginning. With silver prices rising steadily, the coin's intrinsic value quickly outstripped its face value. It was soon replaced with the dodecagonal, Cupro-Nickel 50c coin still used today - and remains a one-year-only issue.
