One of Orange’s favourite sons, Andrew Barton 'Banjo' Paterson was born at the nearby property Narrambla in 1864. His birth was registered at the Orange Court House and his baptism was recorded at Holy Trinity Anglican Church. The Banjo Paterson Australian Poetry Festival is held annually in Orange. The great poet’s birthplace is commemorated by the Banjo Paterson Memorial Park commemorative obelisk and statue, on Ophir Road, Orange.

A poet, journalist, editor and solicitor, Andrew Barton 'Banjo' Paterson is remembered as Australia’s master balladeer, the author of classics such as 'Clancy of the Overflow' (1889), an ode to the romance of bush life; 'The Man from Snowy River' (1890), celebrating the youth and of the mountain horseman; 'Waltzing Matilda' (1895), a political allegory for the Great Shearers’ Strike of 1891; and 'Mulga Bill’s Bicycle' (1896), an amusing parody of those caught in the bicycling craze of the late 19th century.
