In August 1966, Vincent Lingiari and the Gurindji people walked away from Wave Hill station in the Northern Territory, refusing to continue working under conditions of deep inequality on land that had always been theirs. What began as a demand for equal wages grew into a powerful assertion of land rights, cultural survival and dignity. The strike lasted nearly a decade and became a defining chapter in Australia’s journey toward recognising First Nations ownership of Country. It paved the way for the historic 1975 handback of land by Prime Minister Gough Whitlam — the moment he poured soil into Lingiari’s hands — and for the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act 1976, the first Australian law to allow claims based on traditional ownership.
This 2026 50c uncirculated coin captures that legacy with quiet strength. The reverse shows the Gurindji community setting out on the walk-off, their long shadows stretching across the land and forming the word “UNITY.” In the sky, Lingiari’s words call for blackfella and whitefella to live together as mates. A hand pouring soil into an open palm recalls the 1975 ceremony, while the landscape itself becomes part of the story of connection between people and Country. The inscriptions mark both the 1966 Walk Off and the 1976 Act. Struck in cupro-nickel to uncirculated standard and limited to a mintage of 60,000, the coin is presented on an informative card that includes the famous photograph of Whitlam and Lingiari, making it both a collectible and a thoughtful reminder of a pivotal moment in Australian history.
