In 1966 Australia stepped into a new monetary era when decimal currency replaced pounds, shillings and pence. Almost twenty years later, in 1984, the one-dollar note gave way to a coin whose reverse became one of the most recognisable images in the nation’s pocket change: Stuart Devlin’s lively “mob of five” kangaroos. That design captured both the stillness and the sudden energy of Australia’s most iconic animal. Now, sixty years after decimalisation, the Royal Australian Mint has added a sixth kangaroo — a quiet but powerful tribute to six decades of decimal currency and to the enduring place of the kangaroo on Australian money.
The 2026 frosted uncirculated release presents Devlin’s expanded “Mob of Six” in brilliant detail. Five kangaroos move and interact around a larger, dominant figure that strides confidently across the field, the whole group arranged around the bold “1 DOLLAR” inscription. Struck in 1oz of pure silver with a frosted finish that makes the animals stand out sharply against a softer background, the coin is presented in a clear capsule with a colourful insert showing kangaroos silhouetted against a glowing Australian sunset. Limited to a mintage of 10,000, it is both a celebration of a landmark anniversary and a handsome addition to any collection of Australian wildlife or modern circulating-coin history.
